The setup steps that are not obvious, and what to check first.

Colour swatches show as text buttons

Shopify supplies swatch data per product. Set it under Products → the product → Variants → the Color option → a swatch per value.

Recommendations are empty

"You may also like" uses Shopify's recommendations, which need enough order history or a configured Search & Discovery setup. "Pairs well with" needs complementary products set in that app. When either has nothing to show, the whole section removes itself rather than leaving a heading over empty space.

The editorial product grid looks like an even grid

The wide feature tile needs two full rows of products before it engages — below that a single stranded tile reads as a mistake, so the grid stays even.

My size guide table will not save

Shopify's rich-text fields accept only paragraphs, lists and headings, not tables. Put the table on a page and point the size guide block at it.

Demo products are showing on my storefront

They appear in the theme editor by default so you can preview a section before assigning a collection. They only reach shoppers if you switch on Theme settings → Demo content → show on the live storefront.

The browser logs a 404 for favicon.ico

Set a favicon under Theme settings → Brand.

Something looks wrong after an update

Duplicate your live theme before updating, compare, then publish. If a section has moved or a setting has been renamed, the changelog says so.
